How cutting your food waste can help the climate?

According to the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations, one third of greenhouse emissions globally come from agriculture, and 30% of the food we produce is wasted – about 1.8 billion tonnes of it a year. If, as a planet, we stopped wasting food altogether, we’d eliminate 8% of our total emissions. Discarded waste rotting in landfills gives off methane, a potent greenhouse gas 25 times more efficient at trapping heat than carbon dioxide.

The Institution of Green Engineers (IGEN) has come up with the mission to reduce CO2 through food waste. In aid of UN- International Day of Awareness on Food Loss and Waste Reduction, 29 September, the IGEN council decided to celebrate the day with the campaign titled “IGEN Food Waste Battle Contest 2020”. We are happy to note that, Indian Federation of Culinary Associations partnered with IGEN to execute the event globally.
